Strategies to deal with the hardening of grease in rolling mill bearings

Causes of grease hardening

 

Pollution: dust, soil and other impurities mixed into the grease, damage its structure.

High temperature evaporation: under high temperature environment, low viscosity base oil is easy to volatilize, making the grease hard.

 

Oxidation reaction: When exposed to air for a long time, the base oil oxidizes, similar to asphaltization.

 

Overheating: Excessive filling or poor heat dissipation causes the machine parts to overheat, causing the grease to fail.

 

Mechanical action: The rolling bearing exerts shear force on the grease during operation, resulting in oil separation.

 

Static pressure: Under continuous high pressure, the oil in the grease will be precipitated.

 

Physical stress: vibration or centrifugal force will also accelerate the grease separation process.

 

Effects of hardening of grease

 

Hardening of grease causes poor lubrication, increases frictional resistance, consumes more power, and can cause the system to overheat. 

 

Prevention and treatment measures

 

Choose the right grease: Choose a high quality and compatible grease according to the working conditions.

 

Proper filling: Avoid overfilling and ensure uniform grease distribution.

 

Correct storage: Keep it clean, prevent impurities from mixing, and avoid the confusion of different types of grease.

 

Self-dilution is not recommended: Do not simply add base oil to dilute hardened grease, as this will affect its stability and efficiency.

 

Proper storage: The surface should be smoothed after use to reduce the risk of leakage of base oil.
